Steve Byers, Founder
Steve Byers founded the EnergyPro Exchange (EPX) as a collaborative aimed at professionalizing America’s top energy rating companies and improving the state of the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) industry. As a founding principal of EnergyLogic, a leader in the energy ratings industry, Steve has deep technical knowledge of energy ratings, a passion for building science, and a drive to leverage energy raters – “an underutilized resource” – to help builders create value, reduce risk and improve quality. Steve’s vision in founding EPX is based on his recognition that “not all energy raters are created equally,” and his belief that competent, professional energy raters create added value for builders.
Steve was raised in a military family that took him to a number of locations including Colorado, Georgia, Virginia and Germany. After graduating from the Air Force Academy, he flew C-130s for five years. Not knowing exactly what kind of career he wanted to pursue, Steve left the Air Force, married Wynne Maggi and moved to Atlanta, where Wynne was completing her PhD in anthropology. Soon after that, Steve began working as an intern for Southface Energy Institute, where he worked his way up to running field operations and became impassioned about energy conservation.
Returning to Colorado, Steve and Wynne started EnergySmiths, later merging their company with BuiltWright to form EnergyLogic in Berthoud, Colorado, Wynne’s hometown. Steve is dedicated to building sustainable community in his adoptive hometown.
Steve earned a bachelor’s degree in Asian history from the Air Force Academy and a Master of Public Administration from Georgia State University. He is a RESNET-certified trainer and quality assurance designee. Hiking, gardening, movies, reading and great beer are a few of his favorite things.
